When most people think of the song that sums up five-time GRAMMY winner Billy Joel it's “Piano Man,” the autobiographical tune he introduced May 27 at the last of his three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl as being about “a situation west of Wilshire.” But on this night it was “The Entertainer,” another Joel song title that best described his performance. … As the crowd filed out of the Bowl, I heard someone say, “That was unbelievable.” It was that good, but you would've expected nothing less than absolute mastery from a brilliant showman and tunesmith flipping through four decades of songs that have become the soundtrack of our lives. – GRAMMY.com
Playing the third of three sold-out concerts that marked this lifelong New Yorker’s first visit to L.A.’s most iconic venue, Billy Joel, 65, drew wild applause and inspired dancing in the aisles with a two-hour blast to various points in his past — from “Everybody Loves You Now,” the prescient show-biz lament from his 1971 debut, to the bouncy title track from 1993’s “River of Dreams,” his last album of new pop songs. … At its best, this frequently thrilling performance demonstrated how much he has left to tell us. – Los Angeles Times
More importantly, his delight was evident. Even as he sang songs he’d performed thousands of times, there was no sense that he was phoning it in. He was as present as I remember him being in all the shows I saw growing up. He remarked a number of times on what a “great job” he had, marveling that, at 65, he had been at it for 50 years. The show was deeply satisfying: the songs have held up and his delivery was as strong as ever, as was his voice. – HitFix
So Billy comes out and does stuff that's not obscure, but never hit the radio. And in between he's telling us stories, making jokes, playing riffs. It's as if your best friend came over and tickled the ivories on your mother's baby grand. Because that's what music used to be…music, first and foremost. …And if you were there, your whole life flashed through your brain, you bonded with this guy who was not playing a role, but just being himself, comfortable in his skin after all these years. Yes, it's still rock and roll to me. And Billy. And if you want to see a show that's alive, not calcified…GO! – Bob Lefsetz
