Re: What Impact Did The Vietnam War Have On You And Your Music? (University of Akron - March 19, 1996)

I have only today found this website. I just wanted to tell Mr. Joel how much I appreciate the song "Goodnight Saigon" As a Vietnam vet I have cherished this song all these years. And as he knows, most of the warriors that fought this war, were not there for a political reason. Most of use hated the war. Our lottery number came up and for many of us, Canada was not an option. For those of us who were lucky to have survived the war, I, we, owed it to the brothers who's names are on that black wall in Washington, to live our lives the best we could in honor of those who did not make it home. "Goodnight Saigon" captured just about everything I experienced in the war and it has served as a reminder to me that I was fortunate to have survived and I hade to do the best I could in life. I have not made a fortune, but I have a wonderful family and have had a great career.

I love all of the Piano Man's songs, and "River Of Dreams" is just about my favorite.

I have been to many Billy Joel concerts over the years and am looking forward to his return to Nashville, TN.

Thanks again for all that you have done.
