Vietnam Vets

Vietnam Vets

I am writing this in hopes that someone reads this. I am working on a play about the women who volunteered to go to Vietnam. I have read about the charities that Billy Joel donates to in support of our Vets. His song Goodnight Saigon is stunning to listen to, especially after reading about what life was like for our soldiers over there.

There was no official list of how many women went over there during the war. Anyone who served was forced to put an M next to their name regardless of sex. Therefore, these women were ignored when they got home. So many soldiers were treated horribly after returning from this unpopular war, but the women had it even worse. They were told they weren't even there. Mostly serving as nurses the women who volunteered were mostly in their early 20's. I did this play to tell their stories.

The play is called, "A Piece of My Heart". It is going up late February in New York City at the historical theatre, "The Living Theatre". I wanted to have a fundraiser to spread the word about the play and raise money for The Vietnam Womens Memorial Foundation. We are a new theatre company so we do not have much monetary to give but the cause itself is worth all the trouble.

At our first run we had 4 women who served come and tell their stories. Some women were gracious enough to tell the audience what the war was like for them, others were grateful to have someone there to listen to their stories that no one else had wanted to hear. I had the daughter of one of these ladies thank me for showing her the stories her mom had always told her about. Another lady came up to me thanking me for making it okay for her to talk to about a time in her life she had buried from those around her. So, you understand why this show is so important. Not just for the generation of that time, but for the generation now and those to come.

If anyone knows of a way to contact Billy, to see if he would give even one song for this cause, please let me know.

Thank you
