Billy describes the impact of the Vietnam War on himself, his friends and his music in this latest video from our "Questions & Answers" lecture series. Billy was asked this question during a lecture at the University of Akron in 1996, and he discusses the draft and how soldiers came back from Vietnam and asked him to write a song about their experiences.

What is the anatomy of a song? Billy answers this question with a performance of “The Entertainer“ on guitar, recorded during a Q&A session at Harvard University in 1994. He has broken many piano strings on stage, but here he breaks a guitar string as he recounts his inspiration for writing the song. In 1996, Billy Joel gave a Q&A at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and was asked about his first piano teacher. In his answer, Billy plays the first song he ever learned on piano, and shows how he began to improvise with classical music. He also describes how taking piano lessons was like putting a "kick me" sign on his back, but he learned how to box, and started meeting girls. Considering few of the finalists on this year's show are rock-oriented, it may be an equally daunting task to reinterpret the music of the Piano Man and one of music history's biggest hitmakers, especially for someone like Jessica Sanchez or Joshua Ledet. On the other hand, the likes of gritty-voiced belters Erika Van Pelt and Elise Testone may fair better than weeks past, and certainly Colton Dixon, to whom a piano bench is home, may have an advantage.
