During the session, student Michael Pollack, a Long Island native, asked if he could accompany Billy on piano and perform "New York State Of Mind." Billy Joel's performances of "Miami 2017 (Sandy)," "Movin’ Out" and "You May Be Right" are included in the new 121212: The Concert For Sandy Relief benefit album, on sale now at iTunes. The Robin Hood Foundation’s Relief Fund will receive 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of this album. The Relief Fund is providing money, material and know-how to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm.
American Songwriter is taking a look back at one of the songs from Billy's 1976 Turnstiles album, "I've Loved These Days." Here is an excerpt from the magazine:
While it lacks the big hits of some of the albums that followed it, 1976’s Turnstiles was a turning point in the career of Billy Joel. Joel had recently left Los Angeles to return to New York and decided that he would take charge of his own sound for the first time in his career.
As he told actor Alec Baldwin in an interview in June of this year for New York’s WNYC, Joel’s decision to produce the album himself was one that was necessary at that point. “Turnstiles was recorded in New York,” he said. “I produced it myself, which, in hindsight, was probably not a good idea, but I didn’t want people telling me what band to work with, how to do the songs. I wanted to do it my way.”

Billy performed six songs at last night's historic 12.12.12 The Concert For Sandy Relief, joining other music greats including Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and more to raise awareness and money to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. The show, which included tributes to first responders and those affected by the storm, was broadcast to an estimated 2 billion viewers and already raised $32 million in funds before anyone took the stage.
Tune in to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon this Thursday, December 13th at 12:35 a.m. EST to catch Billy talking about performing in 12.12.12 The Concert For Sandy Relief. The 12.12.12 concert will be broadcast live this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. EST from Madison Square Garden to more than 2 billion people on U.S. and international television stations, and Billy's Fallon appearance will air the next night on NBC.
