Billy's Mom Rosalind Nyman Joel Dies At 92

Rosalind Nyman Joel

Rosalind Nyman Joel was born on February 15, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, to Philip and Rebecca Nyman, who had emigrated from England. In a 1942 student musical production at City College of New York, she met Howard Joel, a German immigrant whose family had escaped Nazi Germany, in 1939. World War II would interrupt their courtship, but after Howard’s service in the U.S. Army, he returned and they married in 1946. Their son William Martin Joel was born in May of 1949. Later, the family adopted Judy, daughter of Rosalind’s late sister Muriel.

Rosalind and Howard Joel divorced in 1957, and as a single mother, she did clerical work for various businesses near the family home in Hicksville, Long Island.

In addition to an active social life, she supported various charitable endeavors. Progressing from her strong support in assuring his musical education, the son who would reach world renown as singer-songwriter Billy Joel used his grounding in classical music to help create one of pop music’s most enduring bodies of work.

His poignant song, “Rosalinda’s Eyes,” from the 1978 album, 52nd Street, is a tribute to her, derived from the family history.

Rosalind Nyman Joel passed away July 13, 2014 at the age of 92.

She is survived by son Billy Joel, and her daughter Judy Molinari; her sister, Bertha Miller; and her two granddaughters, Alexa Ray Joel, and Rebecca Molinari Gehrkin.

In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to The Little Shelter in her name.

So sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I know it is probably hard to even think about, but as your songs say, life is fallible (well not literally, but you know what I mean). Please know that she raised a great son, one whom the world enjoys now for all of his accomplishments and without Rosalind, these songs and his life would not have happened!

Dear Mr.Joel,

We are so sorry to hear of your deep and profound loss. Your mother is so very proud of you, now and forever. Remember your Lullabye, she is ALWAYS with you.

The first album I ever had was THE STRANGER. I was seven years old and started piano lessons because of you. I have seen you in concert countless times. I remember standing in the pouring rain at 6:30 am to get tickets when I was a teenager.

Twenty-four years ago my now husband kept a promise and showed up at my house with a Billy Joel t shirt...I couldn't get to that Storm Front Concert. I just wore that shirt to The Garden a few weeks ago and took our middle son with me. He is now your biggest fan-it all comes around full circle. My oldest son is profoundly handicapped and is a young man of few words...but he knows your songs, word for word.

I don't know if you have time to read these messages....you have had such a deep impact on my life. I wanted to let you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. You are ALL ABOUT SOUL...

Rock On, Piano Man...

We are so sorry to hear of your loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My son Johnathon and daughter Christina, fellow musicians, and I will be at your concert in the upper section of Wrigley Field Friday night with our hearts going out to you! Young adults now, I raised them as a single mom and some of our best memories are of us driving along the winding Illinois River road to Starved Rock State Park in Utica from our home in Ottawa. Every time we took that road we loudly played our beloved Billy Joel tape and sang along with you to "River of Dreams", and I recall those times fondly to this day whenever I drive along that road. We thank you for sharing your gift of music with us. Our love for your songs lives on past those memories of years gone by, as we make another memory in attending your concert together during my daughter's visit from California. In preparation for this, my kids sat down at my son's porch piano a couple of weeks ago on the 4th, singing and playing together your "New York State of Mind". So for now and as you play Friday night, even as you grieve, we are praying that the Lord will strengthen, uphold and comfort you, Billy. May God give you and your family grace and peace during this time, and and may He bless the memory of your dear mom!

Deepest Condolences from Jim and Joanne Kleiner

To Billy and Judy and all the family Jim and Joanne Kleiner send our deepest and heartfelt condolences. Rosalind will always be remembered fondly by us and we have many memories of her living on Meeting Lane. We know that life was not easy for her then. She passed exactly one year to the day after our Dad Nicholas passed. It is very hard when one of your parents pass away no matter how much you are prepared for it. I know they are both in a better and beautiful place. Our fondest memory of her is the day she rang our doorbell and had Billy's first album for us to listen to. I remember how proud she was and rightly so. We listened and were thrilled with that album and I told her to tell Billy not to forget us when he becomes rich and famous. Billy never forgot us and his roots in Hicksville. He has treated us so very kindly when we have had the chance to see him backstage at concerts. We are so very proud of him. We also were very impressed with Alexa when we had the chance to hear her sing and talk with her at the Mohegan Sun. We are so proud of her as well. I am so grateful that Rosalind got to see Billy get the Kennedy Center Honor because that was an incrediable night. Rosalind and her love for the arts had a great impact on the world through her son Billy. His songs have gotten many of us through hard times. We will always remember her - God Bless her. And God Bless Billy and his family.

Dear Billy,

I am so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. For myself, I think somehow it feels like your Mom will always be there....which, of course, in spirit she will always be. The odd thing is I don't think I ever really knew I was a grown up until my Mom passed....kind of like the mantle is passed on. I am surrounding you with prayers and love at this time. I will plan on sending a check to The Little Shelter.

My own mother died in November at 86 after a gracious battle with ALZHEIMERS DISEASE.

Her name was Florence Sue Rowley Bretthauer and she raised seven of us Bretthauers here in MIAMI, FLORIDA. Her husband, (my father) Glenn Alvin Bretthauer, had been the MIAMI

HERALD'S EDITORIAL CARTOONIST between 1941 and 1961. And He always signed his cartoons, " -- BRETT " (Anyone is welcome to find a small body of my father's work by

googling his name.

He passed on in 1985 when I was 16 years old.... it was a turbulent time for us younger BRETTHAUERS, but my MOM, who had absolutely ADORED my father, literally retreated toward sadness and self-pity for about a year afterward. (My NEW YORK SISTER, LAURIE fondly called my mom, " DAD's MUSE ." Later she began to get motivated again and became DETERMINED and DRIVEN to see my younger brother and I graduate HIGH SCHOOL.... we both completed 2 years at MIAMI JACKSON SENIOR HIGH but graduated from SOUTH MIAMI SENIOR, as I was bussed over via a MAGNET SCHOOL PROGRAM called "Center for the Media Arts."

Anyway, I would like to personally THANK Mr. JOEL for STEPPING INTO MY LATE FATHER'S shoes and helping me develop into a HEALTHY, THOUGHTFUL and CREATIVE YOUNG MAN.

WITH INSIGHTFUL LYRICS, WHICH ALWAYS TARGETED THE HUMAN CONDITION, BILLY JOEL SONGS GAVE ME DIRECTION AND VALUABLE WISDOM WHICH OFTEN KEPT ME GROUNDED.
HELPING ME KEEP SOME ADOLESCENT THINGS IN BALANCED PERSPECTIVE.

SO, IN A WAY, HE'S BEEN KIND OF A SURROGATE FATHER TO ME, AND AT THIS MOURNFUL TIME I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND MY SINCEREST CONDOLENCES TO ALL THE SURVIVING FAMILY
MEMBERS INCLUDING ALEXA RAY ( WHO I WATCHED GET BORN AND RAISED ) !!!

PLEASE ACCEPT THESE CONDOLENCES ON ROSALYND'S PASSING ON BEHALF OF ALL THE BRETTHAUERS

Sincerely,

James D. Bretthauer, L.M.T.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

September, 1981, the album "Songs in the Attic" is released. I am in Westwood, the hippest part of Los Angeles at the time visiting a friend who worked at legendary Tower Records.

"Attic" was all over the place. Front window blow-up of cover, several posters at the entrance, stacks of wax in the front of the store, and a display bin with nothing but the LP with a rather grandmotherly woman looking at the same display. Sarcastic me says "Tsk, another album by Billy." To which she responds, "and it is his best album ever." I am stunned that she even responded, but I continue my pursuit of insulting by asking her how she knew it was "his best" since it was released that very day.

"I am his mother" and of course, I remained cocky. "Anybody can tell me that", I said. She then ripped the plastic off, opened the package filled with photos and proceeds to point to a picture of herself holding baby Billy. She ended the conversation telling me I was going to buy that freshly opened album. RIP, Rosalind Joel. You gave the world a musical genius.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Joel while walking my dog in Huntington Bay many times over the years. She was a feisty lady and we shared a mutual love for animals and working to help those innocent furry friends that needed love and homes. We talked many time as we walked and I will remember her warmth with fondness. To her family, although its said 92 years is a life well lived, please know that she will be missed here by many that had the pleasure to know her.

My family is sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom. I remember the days as boys sitting in the little room at # 20, next to the Sump, pounding that old stained Lester upright in the little room, with Whitey waggin', Judy yellin' and Ros giving us praise, hugs and wet kisses. Seems like a lifetime ago, but I'll never forget it.
Ros was a force of nature, strong and determined. She couldn’t have been more proud of you and never lost her motherly concern for your happiness and contentment. She molded your young heart with caring affection and encouraging creativity. As a creative artist herself, she recognized the dark waters of the brooding artist in you.
We are all the products of those that came before us. Ros and Howard lit a spark that you nurtured as an ember, with your work ethic, it became a fire and with added creative effort and more hard work it started a blaze that burns brightly 50 years on. Your legacy is due in large part to that Brooklyn girl from English parents who were exposed to Gilbert and Sullivan and nurtured that talent in their daughter. You blessed her with more joy and pride then she ever thought possible.
Pat & I and Janice & Tom and our families offer sincere condolences to you, Alexa, Judy and your families.
Best Regards,
Robert Breeden
