Billy Joel Cancels 'Book Of Joel'

Billy Joel has chosen to cancel the publication of his forthcoming memoir, "The Book of Joel" that was scheduled for release in June from HarperCollins.

"It took working on writing a book to make me realize that I'm not all that interested in talking about the past, and that the best expression of my life and its ups and downs has been and remains my music." BILLY JOEL

Re: Billy Joel Cancels 'Book Of Joel'

Of course he canceled the book; because it would be something NEW from Billy Joel. Don't get me wrong - I've seen Billy over 15 times starting in 1987 and have loved him/his music for even longer. However, I'm a bit tired of the rehashed greatest hits collections, tours playing the same songs, using the same intro ('The Natural' music anyone?), and touring on the laurels of Elton John, who has put out numerous albums since 1993. Even if Billy wrote one song a year, he'd have 18 new songs for an album since his last. As much as Billy might like not to admit it, he's turned into a Vegas lounge act.

Too bad about this recent news...i am wondering if the current court case brought against him by Liberty affects this.

If you are interested in "whatever happened to" Liberty De Vitto...drop me an Email.
Liberty shares some interesting insights and stories about his time with Billy, and now with this current lawsuit, much of it can not be discussed until it is over.

His life, his book, his choice! But am a bit disappointed. Not at all interested in the gossip. But curious about the early years (my own reasons for that), inspirations for songs, etc., but guess that would've been boring to publishers. They wanted the emotional rollercoaster, and gossip, and pain. I would think he put alot into this decision to not publish. Not sure, but how many really want all the crap in their lives out there for everyone and anyone? And let's face it, when it comes to Billy Joel, most critics trash him and criticize! But we love him anyway!

I, for one, am VERY disappointed that the book has been cancelled. I have been a huge fan since I bought Piano Man in 1973 and was very interested in hearing Billy's point of view on his life and journey. Not looking for a "gossip" piece by any means, but would have liked to hear his side of the story as there are currently two books already out there, the one by Mark Bego and the Angry Young Man book that were basically hatchet jobs. This was the one book I was really looking forward to for this summer and am disappointed that he has decided to pull it.

A real shame...

half of me is pissed off the other half relieved that i won't have read again the dozen or so "amusing" anecdotes that Billy has been spewing out ad nauseam the past 30 odd years. We are all guilty of buying the gazillion re-hashed and re-packaged hits compilations thus lining his pockets without him having to expend a single ounce of energy or creativity.

I am glad you felt like writing this book, since in most cases it driven by a personnal need.

To me, you seem like the kind of persone who never does things half-a.. , therefore, even though I suspect the work was somewhat a huge emotional roller coaster ride, I am most certain that it led to great things on a personnal level.

If that was the case, I am even more glad you decided not to publish it. I'd rather this experience to remain something precious for you, rather than becoming gossip material for the many green plants IQs out there.

Wishing you all the best !

Dear Bill,

You of course are the best judge of the way you want to be remembered, and since your body of work will stand up to the scrutiny of the ages, a biography would just have been a bonus look into someone I as a fan find fascinating.

Keep up the good work,

Julie La Salle
