On Saturday night, Billy Joel’s catalog got its latest workout at the Palace of Auburn Hills, a full-bodied show for a packed house of more than 18,000. …If anyone defines consummate pop professionalism, it’s the veteran New York star at the grand piano. From opener “Movin’ Out” onward, this was a reliably buoyant, bounding performance from a guy who could probably rock a big room in his sleep. It was one of those signature Saturday concert nights at the Palace, an in-the-round setup with a giddy sing-along crowd keyed in on Joel at his revolving piano. – Detroit Free Press

The show delivered an unflappable catalog of songs you know by heart, songs you’ve worn out on vinyl, cassette and CD. …And there were a few curve balls in the mix, too: There was talk this tour would find the 64-year-old digging into rarities and unheralded gems from his career, and he did so by dusting off “Vienna,” from The Stranger, as well as 1982’s “A Room of Our Own” and 1980’s “Sometimes a Fantasy.” – The Detroit News

Joel and his eight-piece band slipped a bit of “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” in between songs early in the show and not long after played a fuller version of “Dancing in the Street.” …And in the midst of a late-set rendition of “The River of Dreams,” Joel and company broke into a portion of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.” …This was Joel’s 14th sold-out appearance at The Palace, and he was certainly filling the area’s biggest buildings well before the arena opened in 1988. Saturday’s performance showed why that’s been the case – and why it will be the case the next time through, too.

Going into Saturday's concert, Billy Joel had performed 13 sold out shows at The Palace and entertained more than 250,000 fans — the fourth-highest tour attendance in the building's history. …Instant classic hits, sing-along anthems, serious musicianship and enough swagger for a 64-year-old piano player to entertain fans of all ages. It was fun seeing the twentysomethings sing along to all his hits. – MLive
