In 1996, Billy Joel gave a Q&A at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and was asked about his first piano teacher. In his answer, Billy plays the first song he ever learned on piano, and shows how he began to improvise with classical music. He also describes how taking piano lessons was like putting a "kick me" sign on his back, but he learned how to box, and started meeting girls. American Idol's Season 11 Top 10 was announced on Thursday night's episode, which sent 16-year-old Shannon Magrane home after a difficult week where the contestants were challenged to sing a song from the year they were born. Will next week's theme of Billy Joel songs be any easier?

Considering few of the finalists on this year's show are rock-oriented, it may be an equally daunting task to reinterpret the music of the Piano Man and one of music history's biggest hitmakers, especially for someone like Jessica Sanchez or Joshua Ledet. On the other hand, the likes of gritty-voiced belters Erika Van Pelt and Elise Testone may fair better than weeks past, and certainly Colton Dixon, to whom a piano bench is home, may have an advantage.

Billy addressed students at Five Towns College, Dix Hills, Long Island, dressed up for the occasion in a 'suite n’tie.' One student asked if Billy encountered any "stumbling blocks" during the course of his career. In his answer, Billy discusses the myth of "artist management" and what can happen if an artist doesn’t stay vigilant in the music business, drawing from his own hard-earned experiences.

On the evening of Thursday, Feb. 23, Billy Joel took the stage in Lynn University’s Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center for “An Evening of Questions & Answers … And a Little Music.” The sold-out event was an intimate engagement only open to Lynn students, staff and faculty that brought together an audience from several generations. One student asked, “What does it feel like to know your music spans generations?” “It feels damn good,” said Joel who was first seen by some audience members in the 1970s while others were first introduced to his music on Sesame Street.
